IMANI SUMMER UNIVERSITY SEMINAR SERIES, AUGUST 13- 17 2007.

This year the Centre for Humane Education (IMANI), a Templeton laureate organisation in Africa, is teaming up with forward thinking organisations, including Ghana's premier liberal arts college, Ashesi University, the International Policy Network, a leading London-based global think tank, and the respected US-based educational charity, Cato University, a subsidiary of the world renowned Cato Institute, to assemble some of Ghana's, Africa's, and the world's most acclaimed thinkers and practitioners to inspire the next generation of Ghanaian and African thinkers and innovators to greater heights.

The IMANI West Africa Summer University (IMSU) 2007 will take place from August 13 - 17 in the serene surroundings of Ashesi University's residential campus in the heart of Ghana's historic capital of Accra. Here student participants will take advantage of the intellectually charged atmosphere to question, debate, challenge, and learn from speakers, instructors and mentors with rich and varied backgrounds about the great ideas that will define the great struggles Africa will witness in the course of this new century.

In this same spirit of free and critical thinking and exchange, they will be inspired to work together with their peers to create and generate new models and concepts of addressing the multitude of difficulties Africans today face in their efforts to conceive of a future in which persistent failure to address the basic needs of the continent's citizens is not viewed as a badge of self-pity, or worse of heroic endurance, but as a call for radical transformation.
Challenged to disregard outmoded justifications for Africa's continued lack of economic progress, increasing corruption, low levels of business and scientific innovation, failing healthcare and educational systems, student participants will confront head on the crisis of self-belief that prevents the modern African from demanding the highest levels of performance from the leadership of her continent. They will confront the crisis of confidence that stifles entrepreneurial adventure, and prevents the growth of sustainable enterprises. And above all, it is passionately hoped, that they will discover within themselves the belief that they can transform this lamentable state of affairs into one in which the continent of Africa, self-assured and self-confident, can lift off the veil of shame and rise forth to show the world her true potential.

We extend a special invitation to you, dear future leader, to join us for a transformative experience. Visit www.imaniseminars.com to apply

In service,
Franklin Cudjoe

The coalition of NGOs appointed Franklin Cudjoe as the first National Programme Director in charge of the first MDG which is to "Reduce extreme poverty and hunger by halving the proportion of people whose income is less than $1 a day and the proportion of people who suffer from hunger". The role demands that Franklin gives guidance and write position papers on how the goal could be achieved.

Franklin briefly talked about Julian Morris's edited "Sustainable Development: Promoting progress of perpetuating poverty" and James Gwartney and Richard Stroup's "What everyone should know about economics and prosperity". He gave out copies to some participants.
